Remedial Classes in the Daneshwar area

The project, financed by “Ein Herz für Kinder”, aims to support 750 primary school children with remedial classes in order to identify school dropouts, integrate them into school operations and thus pave the way out of child labor. The project is aimed at children in state primary schools who need support in grades 1 to 5.

The aim of the remedial classes is to improve the children’s learning success by identifying and resolving specific difficulties in individual subjects. Children who have been identified by teachers or through observations by educational volunteers as “slow learners” or at risk of school dropouts are supported in additional courses.

These additional teaching units take place in common rooms or on the grounds of the state schools and offer the children affected the opportunity to catch up on missed content and not lose touch with regular classes. The targeted remedial classes are ultimately intended to enable all children to develop their full potential and distance themselves from child labor in the long term.

Most important result of remedial teaching:

  • Remedial classes were provided in 6 localities in the identified villages/localities.
  • The motivation of the educational volunteers helped in improving the attendance of the children in the government primary school and remedial center.
  • The child friendly behavior of the educational volunteers helped in stimulating the interest of the children in their studies.
  • The special attention given to the identified or weak students was very effective in solving their problems, overcoming difficulties and understanding the subject more easily.
  • The regular mentoring of the dropouts and slow learners to provide extra support was another good initiative which also attracted the attention of the government school teachers.
  • Good support from the government school teachers and school authorities in providing space in the school premises, identifying the weak students etc.
  • The interested persons provided rooms at the community level free of cost to impart knowledge to the children of their community people. There are some villages/working areas where there were not enough community rooms available.
  • It was quite difficult to attract the attention of the parents towards the education of their children. Gradually, the situation improved and many parents are paying attention to it.
  • School dropouts, needy children without parental support or children living with single parents were helped in their education through remedial classes.
  • The learning level of the enrolled children improved. In the grading of the children, which was done at regular intervals, improvements were seen from a lower category mark/grade to a higher mark/grade.
  • Play and infotainment activities with the children, celebrations on special days, local games and participatory activities with the children besides the classroom activities developed new skills and helped them to realize their potential and hidden talents.

Background

XertifiX social project is running in the quarry affected areas of Dhaneshwar, Rajpura and Dabi in Bundi districts of Rajasthan state, India. The project is being implemented by a local partner/NGO, Social Action and Research Center (SARC). It was launched in December 2023. XertifiX has been working in these areas for a long time, mainly on certifying the quarries and factories through regular audits and inspections to promote ethical business practices, implement standards and improve working conditions.

Apart from the business aspect, XertifiX has also focused on the social aspect for which appropriate efforts have been made over time. Prevention of child labour, promotion of schooling of children, awareness raising in the affected worker communities on occupational health, benefits from government schemes, annual training on health and safety and other such initiatives in the common interest of the welfare of the workers, children and their families have been undertaken on a voluntary basis.

Projectpartner

Social Action and Research Centre (SARC) is an NGO in northern India dedicated to combating violence against women and children through a multifaceted approach. Its work is organized around six main thematic areas:

Education and Outreach in Schools and Colleges:

Volunteers visit schools weekly and collaborate with student groups in colleges and universities to spread awareness about gender-based violence, human rights (including the SDGs), and trafficking. They also organize rallies and protests to mobilize community support and refer victims to help.

Mobilizing Women’s Groups:

In communities (notably in parts of Varanasi), SARC has helped form women’s groups that support victims of violence and exploitation. These groups empower women to speak out, report incidents (even directly approaching the police), and tackle broader issues like food security and education. They have successfully intervened in cases such as trapping and facilitating the arrest of a trafficker.

Financial Empowerment:

Believing that financial independence is key to reducing domestic violence, SARC provides vocational training, skills development, and access to part-time jobs. This support helps women become self-reliant, boosting their confidence to stand up against abuse.

Legal Actions and Rehabilitation:

SARC assists survivors with legal recourse by arranging rescue operations (often in collaboration with police, volunteers, and community members), counseling them against accepting monetary settlements from perpetrators, and even providing temporary shelter when necessary. The organization’s efforts often put its team members at personal risk due to harassment and intimidation from powerful offenders.

Counseling Services:

Recognizing the deep trauma many survivors face, SARC offers ongoing counseling (often by trained professionals) and provides additional support such as vocational training and educational opportunities, ensuring that even the youngest or most vulnerable victims receive continuous care.

Training and Advocacy:

SARC serves as a resource for training police, government officials, NGOs, and community groups on women’s human rights, the dynamics of trafficking, and child sexual abuse. In addition, it actively advocates for systemic change—strengthening marginalized women’s groups to pressure officials for better policies and laws, and organizing forums that bring together various stakeholders to combat child sexual abuse and violence against women.

Over its 24-year history, SARC has reached thousands of women and children, making a significant impact on community empowerment, legal justice, and social change in the region.
